🚨 Basingstoke Ice Rink Update – 7th February 2025 🚨
We’ve received an update from Planet Ice on the ongoing refurbishment of Basingstoke Ice Rink, and it’s great to hear that progress is being made!
🔹 Most of the inside of the rink has now been cleared, including the complete removal of the barrier, sound and lighting systems, and the foil thermal sheeting from the ceiling.
🔹 Designs for the front-end areas (reception, skate hire, and servery) have been submitted and are currently being reviewed by architects and designers.
🔹 Structural engineers have been on-site assessing the walkways, pad, and stands, with final drawings expected next week.
🔹 By the end of February, all remaining hardware will be removed, making way for the next phase of construction.
Planet Ice has confirmed they are still working to their existing timeline, so we hope to see even more progress in the coming weeks!
As always, we’ll keep pushing for updates and will share any new information as soon as we get it. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for more good news soon! 🤞🏒

The rink’s transformation is progressing fast - barriers, sound, lighting, and thermal sheeting have all been removed, and designs for key areas like reception and skate hire are under review. Structural engineers have been assessing the site, with final remediation plans set to be completed soon.
Next up: Clearing the remaining hardware by the end of February to continue to keep construction on track!

Our board recently met to discuss the next steps for the Junior Bison, and we’re excited about the opportunity to come back stronger when the rink reopens. We’d love to hear from you—what would you like to see from your club when we return?
We’ve also reached out to Planet Ice for an update on the refurbishment and what it means for the 2025-2026 season. While we wait, we’re exploring ways we can continue to keep the Junior Bison community engaged.

Could we get clarity on who is running/managing the Junior ice hockey if it were to reopen
My current fears are that there will not he enough kids and coaches for my daughter's age group to make a viable team. It's been hard to integrate with a new team but we've done it. Now to pull her back would be another wrench. The journey (3 minutes as opposed to over an hour) is to recommend returning to Basingstoke, but I honestly can't see anything to return to at the moment. There were only three other children in her age group, and I know at least some of them will stay with their new clubs (which have fees that are half the price of the Bison last year). I realise that there are some things that are outside of the club's control, but if we can't ice a team, or my daughter's asked to play up above her ability like she did for the last year of U10s, I can't see the value for us of returning. What I'd like to see is a plan on making viable teams for the future, and what sort of training the club is planning on providing. I'd live some off ice conditioning training and shooting clinics, and these could be provided now with the right planning.
The first thing I would suggest is rebanding the club as something other than the "Bison". The club doesn't own it's own logo/name. The branding belongs to the defunct senior team which in turn belongs to Planet Ice...time for a fresh start; rebrand & rebuild from the ground up without already being partially owned by Planet Ice. A new brand would also allow the club to more easily re-create itself with new ideals and ideas without everyone immediately assuming everything will be exactly the same as it was. In order to attract old players back and new players and coaches, the club will need to listen to what those people are looking for. If the club are already encumbered with same management, same ideas, same everything; it will be difficult to make adjustments.
